दुर्योधन को पूरा विश्वास था कि कौरवों की विजय भीष्म पितामह पर निर्भर है। मगर वो बाकि योद्धाओ को यहाँ नहीं जाताना चाहते थे कि उन्हकी महत्व कम है इस युद्ध मे, तो वो सबको भीष्म पितामह की सहायता करने के लिए कहा। भीष्म निस्सन्देह महान योद्धा है और कभी कोई युद्ध नहीं हारे, मगर अब ये वृद्ध हो चुके है। इसलिए सब सैनिको को चाहिए कि वो उन्हकी सब दिशों से रक्षा करे।
