In Suryavansh there was a truthful, majestic Chakravarti king named Mandhata. He used to take care of the kingdom like his son. Once upon a time, there was no rain in his kingdom for three years. Due to this, his kingdom became distraught after suffering from hunger and thirst. Due to suffering from lack of food, there was a period in his kingdom.
Then the people came and said to the king, “O king! Lord Vishnu in the form of clouds pervades all and it is he who rains. Hey Nripte! People are being destroyed due to a lack of food and water. Do such an effort that will bring welfare. The king said, "You told the truth. However, I will try for the welfare of the people.” Thinking like this, the king took some army with him. After saluting Lord Brahma, he went to the deep forest. The ascetic started wandering in the hermitage of sages.
The king saw the sage Angira, the son of Brahma, whose effulgence was illuminating the directions. Others were known like Brahma. Jitendriya king was pleased to see him and got down from the ride and bowed down at his feet with folded hands. The sage blessed and inquired about the well-being of the seven organs of the kingdom. Then the sage asked the reason for the king's arrival. The king narrated his skill and reason for coming.
The king said, “I have followed everything with religion but it did not rain in my kingdom. I don't know the reason for this. I have come to you to clear this doubt. Do the happiness of the people with the method of peace and welfare.” The sage said, "O king! This Satyug is the best of all ages. In this age, man is a Brahmagyani. All four phases of religion are present in it.
In this age, there is the present; in this age, no one except the present does penance. Hey Rajendra! Shudra is doing penance in your country. It is not raining because of his doing wrong. Take measures to kill him so that the blame can be pacified.” The king said, “I will not kill someone doing penance without any crime. Preach religion to remove sorrow.”
The sage said, "O king! If it is like this, then fast on Ekadashi. There is a famous Ekadashi named Padma in the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh, due to the effect of its fast, there will definitely be rain. It is the giver of all and the destroyer of all troubles. Hey Nrip! You fast it along with your subjects and family.”
Hearing these words of the sage, the king came to his palace and observed a fast on Padma Ekadashi, and on observing the fast, it rained all over the state. By the grace of God, humans have been blessed, that's why this best fast should be observed.
