In ancient times, a king named Mandhata used to rule on the banks of the river Narmada. He was extremely charitable and ascetic. One day when he was doing penance in the forest, a wild bear came from nowhere and started chewing the king's leg. The king remained engrossed in his penance as before. After some time, while chewing his feet, the bear dragged the king to the nearby forest.
The king was very nervous, but he prayed to Lord Vishnu instead of anger and violence in accordance with Tapas Dharma, calling Lord Vishnu with compassion. Lord Sri Hari Vishnu appeared on hearing his call and chased the bear away from there.
The bear had already eaten the king's leg. This made the king very sad. Seeing him sad, Lord Vishnu said: Hey Vats! Do not grieve You go to Mathura and observe the fast of baruthini Ekadashi and worship my Varaha Avatar idol. Due to its effect, you will become strong again. What this bear has bitten you was the crime of your previous birth.
By obeying the Lord, King Mandhata went to Mathura and devoutly observed Baruthini Ekadashi fast. Due to its effect, the king soon became beautiful and full-bodied again. Due to the influence of this Ekadashi, King Mandhata went to heaven. Anyone who is suffering from fear should remember Lord Vishnu by observing a fast on Baruthini Ekadashi. By observing this fast, all sins are destroyed and salvation is attained.
