एक गाँव में एक शिकारी रहता था। वह शिकार करके अपने परिवार का पालन करता था। एक बार उस पर साहूकार का ऋण हो गया। ऋण न चुकाने पर सेठ ने उसे शिव मन्दिर में बन्दी बना लिया। उस दिन शिवरात्रि थी। वह शिव सम्बन्धी बातें ध्यानपूर्वक देखता एवं सुनता रहा। संध्या होने पर सेठ ने उसे अपने पास बुलाया। शिकारी ने अगले दिन ऋण चुकाने का वायदा कर सेठ की कैद से छूट गया। जंगल में एक तालाब के किनारे बेल-वृक्ष पर शिकार करने के लिए मचान बनाने लगा। उस पेड़ के नीचे शिवलिंग था । पेड के पत्ते मचान बनाते समय शिवलिंग पर गिरे। इस प्रकार दिनभर भूखे रहने से शिकारी का व्रत भी हो गया और शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र भी चढ़ गये ।
एक पहर व्यतीत होने पर एक गर्भिणी हिरणी तालाब पर पानी पीने निकली। शिकारी ने उसे देखकर धनुषवाण उठा लिया। वह हिरणी कातर स्वर में बोली, "मैं गर्भवती हूँ। मेरा प्रसव काल समीप ही है। मैं बच्चे को जन्म देकर शीघ्र ही तुम्हारे सामने उपस्थित हो जाऊँगी।" शिकारी ने उसे छोड़ दिया। कुछ देर बाद एक दूसरी हिरणी उधर से निकली। शिकारी ने फिर धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाया। हिरणी ने निवेदन किया, "हे व्याघ्र महोदय! मैं थोड़ी देर पहले ऋतु से निवृत्त हुई हूँ। कामातुर विरहिणी हूँ। अपने पति से मिलन करने पर शीघ्र तुम्हारे समझ प्रस्तुत हो जाऊँगी।" शिकारी ने उसे भी छोड़ दिया। रात्रि के
अन्तिम पहर में एक मृगी अपने बच्चों के साथ उधर से निकली। शिकारी ने शिकार हेतु धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाया। वह तीर छोड़ने ही वाला था कि वह मृगी बोली, "मैं इन बच्चों को इनके पिता के पास छोड़ आऊँ, तब मुझे मार डालना। मैं आपके बच्चों के नाम पर दया की भीख माँगती हूँ।" शिकारी को इस पर भी दया आ गयी और उसे छोड़ दिया। पौं फटने को हुई तो एक तन्दरुस्त हिरन आता दिखाई दिया। शिकारी उसकी शिकार करने के लिए उद्यत हो गया। हिरन बोला, "व्याघ्र महोदय! यदि तुमने इससे पहले तीन मृगियों तथा उनके बच्चों को मार दिया हो तो मुझे भी मार दीजिए ताकि मुझे उनका वियोग न सहना पड़े। मैं उन तीनों का पति हूँ। यदि तुमने उन्हें जीवन दान दिया हो तो मुझपर भी कुछ समय के लिए कृपा करें। मैं उनसे मिलकर तुम्हारे सामने आत्मसमर्पण कर दूँगा।"
मृग की बात सुनकर रात की सारी घटनाएँ उसके दिमाग में घूम गईं। उसने मृग को सारी बातें बता दी। उपवास, रात्रि जागरण तथा शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र चढ़ने से उसमें भगवद् भक्ति का जागरण हो गया। उसने मृग को भी छोड़ दिया। भगवान शिव शंकर की अनुकम्पा से उसका हृदय मांगलिक भावों से भर गया। अपने अतीत के कर्मों को याद करके वह पश्चाताप की अग्नि में जलने लगा। थोड़ी देर बाद हिरण सपरिवार शिकारी के सामने उपस्थित हो गया। जंगली पशुओं की सत्यप्रियता, सात्विकता एवं सामूहिक प्रेम भावना को देखकर उसे बड़ी ग्लानि हुई। उसके नेत्रों से आँसुओं की झड़ी लग गई। उसने हिरण परिवार को मुक्त कर दिया।
देवता इस घटना को देख रहे थे। उन्होंने आकाश से उस पर पुष्प वर्षा की। शिकारी परिवार सहित मोक्ष को प्राप्त हुआ।
A hunter lived in a village. He used to take care of his family by hunting. Once he was in debt to the moneylender. Seth imprisoned him in the Shiva temple for not repaying the loan. That day was Shivratri. He kept watching and listening to the things related to Shiva carefully. Seth called him in the evening. The hunter was released from Seth's prison by promising to repay the loan the next day. On the bank of a pond in the forest, he started building a scaffold for hunting on a vine tree. There was a Shivling under that tree. The leaves of the tree fell on the Shivling while making scaffolding. In this way, due to being hungry for the whole day, the fast of the hunter was also done and Bel leaves were also climbed on the Shivling.
After an hour had passed, a pregnant deer came out to drink water at the pond. Seeing him, the hunter picked up the bow. The deer said in a shrill voice, "I am pregnant. My delivery time is near. I will be present before you soon after giving birth to the child." The hunter left him. After some time, another deer came out from there. The hunter then put an arrow on the bow. Hirani requested, "O tiger sir! I retired from the season a while ago. I am a sensual virgin. I will soon submit to your understanding after meeting my husband." The hunter left him too. of the night
In the last hour, a doe came out from there with her children. The hunter put an arrow on the bow for hunting. He was about to release the arrow when the epilepsy said, "Let me leave these children to their father, then kill me. I beg for mercy in the name of your children." The hunter took pity on this too and released him. When the paw was about to burst, a healthy deer was seen coming. The hunter got ready to hunt him. The deer said, "Mr. Tiger! If you have killed three deer and their children before this, then kill me too so that I do not have to bear their separation. I am the husband of all three of them. If you have given life to them, then also to me. Please be kind for some time. I will meet him and surrender to you."
All the events of the night flashed through his mind after listening to the antelope. He told everything to the deer. Fasting, staying awake at night and offering belpatra on the Shivling awakened devotion to God in him. He also left the deer. With the grace of Lord Shiva Shankar, his heart was filled with auspicious feelings. Remembering his past deeds, he started burning in the fire of repentance. After a while the deer appeared in front of the hunter with his family. Seeing the truthfulness, truthfulness and collective love of wild animals, he felt great guilt. There was a flood of tears from his eyes. He freed the deer family.
The gods were watching this incident. They showered flowers on him from the sky. Salvation was achieved along with the hunter family.
