How to fast on Indira Ekadashi?
Take bath in the morning on the Dashami of Ashwin Krishna Paksha. To please the ancestors, perform Shraddha with devotion. After eating once, sleep on the ground at night. In the morning on Ekadashi, rinse your teeth and wash your face. Accept the rules of fasting with devotion, perform Shradh in front of the idol of Shaligram at noon, worship pure Brahmins, and give food as Dakshina.
The food that is left over from the ancestors and given to the cow. Worship God with fragrance, flowers, etc. Stay awake near God in the night. On the morning of Dwadashi, after worshiping God with devotion, feed the Brahmins. You also eat silently along with your brother, devotee, son, etc.

In the Satyug, Indrasen was the king who suppressed the enemies. He used to rule in Mahishmati Puri, protecting the people. He was the ultimate devotee of God, having son-grandson and food wealth.
One day the king was sitting happily in the assembly. Wise Narad Muni came. Seeing them coming, the king stood up with folded hands and made him sit on the seat. Narad Muni said to the king, "O Raja! How are you?"
After listening to the words of Narad ji, the king said, "O best of sages! By your grace, I am well. All my yagya activities have been successful because of your vision. O Viprarshe! Please tell me the reason for your arrival."
Hearing this, Narad ji said, "O Nripottam! I went from Brahmaloka to Yamaloka. Yamraj worshiped me with devotion. Sitting on a beautiful seat, I praised the righteous, truthful Yamraj. Your father, who has done a lot of good deeds, stays in Yamraj's assembly because of the disturbance in his fast.
Hey Janeshwar! I tell you the message he has said. He has said that due to some disturbance in the previous birth, I live near Yamraj, O son! Give me the virtue of Indira's fast and send me to heaven. Hey Rajan! To send the father to heaven, fast on Indira Ekadashi. With the effect of that fast, your father will go to heaven.”
The king said, "O God! Kindly tell the fast of Indira Ekadashi, by which method, in which way, on which date it should be observed."
Narad ji said, "O king! I tell you the method of this fast. Take a bath early in the morning on the tenth day of Ashwin Krishna Paksha. To please the ancestors, perform Shradh with devotion. After eating once, sleep on the ground at night. On Ekadashi, rinse your teeth and wash your face, follow the rules of fasting with devotion, perform Shradh in front of the idol of Shaligram in the afternoon, worship pure Brahmins, and give Dakshina.
