Earlier in Tretayuga, there used to be a demon named King Bali in South India. Being an Asura, this king was very skilled in ethics and administrative work. King Bali was a descendant of Prahrad, so he had great faith in God. And he was also very generous. All the subjects of the state were happy with his work. Bali was a very ambitious king and wanted to rule over the world.
To fulfill his ambition, Bali attacked the deities and became the king of heaven. After conquering all three worlds with his might, he started performing the Ashwamedha Yagya with the desire for the welfare of Trilokya and the expansion of his kingdom.
Defeated by the Asuras and fled from the kingdom, Indra then reached my abode Vaikunth with the gods and sages. Praised me with beautiful words and Vrihaspati ji worshiped me many times along with the gods. Then for the purpose of helping the deities, I took the fifth incarnation in the form of Vamana and went to the sacrifice of King Bali.
Yudhishthir said - How did you win over the Asura King Bali in the form of Vamana. Tell this story in detail. I am your devotee and I wish to hear this. Shri Krishna said - I will tell the story further, listen to it carefully.
I knew that King Bali was famous for his generosity and keeping this in mind I went to Bali in the form of a Vamana Brahmin and asked him for three steps of land. Generous Mahabali did not send any Brahmin empty-handed and he immediately accepted this point of Vaman Brahmin.
After this Vamana's size kept on increasing and God measured the whole earth with one step and the whole sky with another step. And then asked King Bali, O King, where should I take my third step now? King Bali understood this Leela of mine and bowed his head in front of me and said - "O Lord! I have nothing left except this body of mine, please put your third step on my head. As soon as he stepped on his head, King Bali entered the underworld.
I was pleased with this devotion of King Bali and asked him to ask for a boon. Then King Bali said you allow me to go to your kingdom once a year so that I can ensure the happiness and prosperity of my subjects. Since then, every year on the festival of Onam, King Bali visits his kingdom and inspects the welfare of his subjects.
At the same time, I was pleased to see the humility of the king and said to him - O king! I will always be near you. One idol of mine resides in the hermitage of King Bali and the other idol rests on top of Shesh ji in Ksheer Sagar. When the Ekadashi of Kartik comes, the Lord sleeps there. The virtue that is done in the meantime is better than all other virtues. Hey Rajan! For this reason, the fast of this Ekadashi should be observed diligently.
It is very holy and it is going to remove sins. The sleeping Lord has turned this Ekadashi. With this, curd should be donated along with silver and rice. Hey Rajan! The one who observes this beautiful Ekadashi fast which destroys all sins and gives happiness in this world and salvation in the end goes to Devlok and shines like the moon. One who listens to this story destroys the sins of man. He gets the fruit of the thousand Ashwamedha Yagya.
King Bali is Chiranjeevi and at the end of Kalyug, when the new creation of the earth will take place again, then King Bali will take over the kingdom of heaven.
