On this vrat, you can read shanti path as well. In this vrat, along with other things, laddo is a must to offer to Lord Ganesha. The vrat will be complete after offering water to Moon at night.

Once upon a time, Parvati Ji asked Ganesh Ji “Oh Ganesh Ji! How should you worship on Krishna Chaturthi of Chaitra month? What should be the food on this day? What is the name of the devata of this month and how to does his worship? You tell me that.”
Ganesh Ji told Parvati Ji “O Mahadevi! Ganesha named 'Vikat' should be worshiped on Chaitra Krishna Chaturthi. After fasting the whole day, worship should be done at night with Shodashopachar. After the Brahmin feast, the fasting person himself should take Panchagavya (cow dung, urine, milk, curd, ghee). This is a troublesome fast. On this day, by performing Havan with pure ghee and bijore lemon, even infertile women get a child. Hey Shailputri! Its history is very amazing, only by remembering a man gets success.”
Ganesha told the story of a king named Makardhwaj:
In ancient times, there used to be a king named Makardhwaj in Satyuga. He was a protector of the people. There was no poor in his kingdom. The four varnas (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra) followed their respective religions. People had no fear of thieves and dacoits etc. All the people were generous, intelligent, charitable, and pious. Despite all this, the king had a sorrow that he had no child. But after some time, by the grace of Maharishi Yajnavalkya, he was blessed with a son. He became very happy.
The king wanted to spend most of his time with his son, so he left the charge of the kingdom to his minister Dharmapala and started raising his son. Minister Dharampal became rich when the state government came into his hands. By the blessings of God, the minister had five sons. They all started consuming money without thinking. The minister got all his sons married with great fanfare.
The daughter-in-law of the youngest son of minister Dharmapala was very religious. She used to worship Ganesh a lot and used to keep fast for him. He devotedly kept fast and worshiped Ganapati on Chaitra Krishna Chaturthi. Seeing this, her mother-in-law said, "Hey! Are you trying to control my son through tantra-mantra?”
When the daughter-in-law did not agree even after repeatedly stopping the mother-in-law, the mother-in-law said, "I do not like all this. Do not do all this in my house. Otherwise, I will punish you."
The daughter-in-law said, "I am just doing a fast for the troublesome Gajanan. This fast is very fruitful. You should also keep it. This keeps happiness in the house."
The mother-in-law said "I don't know Ganesh, who he is. We are the people of the royal family and which of our calamities will he destroy."
Then the mother-in-law said to her son that "O son! Your daughter-in-law is doing sorcery (jadoo-tone) and despite my refusal many times, she is not obeying because of her stubbornness. Now she has to be corrected by beating."
At the behest of the mother, the son beat up the daughter-in-law. But even after suffering beatings, the daughter-in-law completed the fast of Ganesha. After the worship, she prayed to Ganesh Ji, "O Ganapati! O Vighnavinayak! Do something so that my in-law's mind instills faith in you."
To remedy the problem of his Bhagat, the Lord at the same time kidnapped the son of the king and kept it hidden in the palace of the minister Dharmapala. Ganesha took off the clothes, jewelry, etc. of the prince and threw them in the palace, and disappeared himself.
The king was walking in his palace and while roaming around he saw that the prince's clothes, jewelry, etc. were lying on the ground. Seeing this, the king started searching for his son and called him quickly but there was no answer.
The king was very upset. Then the king called the minister Dharampal and asked him, "Where has the prince gone? Who has done this evil act? Hi! Where has the prince gone?"
The minister said- "O king! Where can the prince go like this. He will be somewhere. I am now conducting searches in all places."
After this, the king asked his servants, bodyguards, other ministers, etc. to locate the prince as soon as possible. After getting the order from the king, they started searching in all the places.
When the prince was nowhere to be found. Then everyone came to the king and said in fear, "Maharaj! The prince was nowhere to be found. No one saw the prince coming and going. But this prince's jewelry was found near the house of minister Dharampal."
Hearing this, the king called the minister. The king asked the minister, "Where is the prince? Tell me the truth, otherwise, I will kill you and destroy your family."
The minister was surprised when the king threaten him. The minister said, "O king! I did not do this work. I find out who has done this evil act and bring the prince to you as soon as possible.” Dharampal got very upset and came to the palace and told the whole incident to his wife, sons, and all the daughters-in-law and asked, "Who has done this deed? Tell me clearly If the prince is not traced, the king will destroy my dynasty."
Everyone was very surprised and upset. After listening to the father-in-law, the younger daughter-in-law gave a solution and said "O father! Why are you worrying so much? You worship Ganapati and all your problems will be removed. If from the king to all the men and women of the city, children and old people, in the month of Chaitra do a fast on Ganesh Chaturthi, then by the grace of Ganesh Ji, the prince will be found. Trust me, my word will never be false."
Hearing the talk of the younger daughter-in-law, the father-in-law with folded hands said, "O daughter-in-law! You are blessed, you save me and my family." Then all the people, including the king, started fasting for the troublesome Ganesh Chaturthi for the happiness of Ganesha. Ganeshji was pleased with this fast.
He quickly revealed the prince to all the people. The townspeople were surprised to see this. There was no limit to the joy of the king. Everybody was very pleased. The king said, "O Vighnavinayak! You are blessed and the minister's Kalyani daughter-in-law is also blessed because of this I got my son.”
Therefore, all people should always keep this childless fast duly.
