When Ramchandraji resided in Panchavati with Sita and Lakshman during exile, Sita was taken away by Ravana. Ramchandra Ji was very sad due to that sorrow. While traveling in the forest, he saw Jatayu's impending death and killed a demon named Kabandha. Jatayu also died after telling the story of Sita to Ramchandra. Then Ramchandra Ji became friends with Sugriva and the army of monkeys gathered.

Then Hanuman Ji saw Sita Ji in Ashok Vatika and did a great job by giving Ramji's ring to Sita ji. Then returned and narrated the whole story of Sita Ji. Then Ramchandra Ji seeing the ocean with the monkeys said to Laxman Ji, “O Sumitra! By what virtue should we cross the ocean? Because this ocean is full of bottomless water.”

Lakshman ji said, “O Puran Purushottam! You are Adidev! Bakdalbhya Muni lives on this island. His ashram is two kos from here. Ask the same ancient Shrestha Rishi.” After listening to this, Ramchandra ji went to see Bakdalbhya Muni. Ramchandra Ji bowed down to the sage sitting like another Vishnu. Then knowing Ramchandraji as Puran Purushottam, Muni understood that for some reason he has assumed a human body.

Then the sage said, “O Ram! why you came here?" Ramchandra ji said, “O Mune! I have come to conquer Lanka, please tell me the solution.”

Muni said, “O Ram! I will call it the best fast among all fasts, by doing this you will get victory soon and you will get special fame by conquering Lanka along with the demons. You do this fast with a concentrated mind. There is an Ekadashi named Vijaya in the Krishna Paksha of Phalgun, fasting for it will give you victory. Listen to the method of this fast.
