उपनिषदों के अनुसार सृष्टि के शुरूआती समय में भगवान शिव से ज्ञान लेकर भगवान ब्रह्मा ने सभी जीवों और इंसानों की रचना की। लेकिन वे अपनी रचना से वे संतुष्ट नहीं थे। उन्हें लगता था कि कुछ कमी रह गई है। चारों ओर इतनी शान्ति और सन्नाटा रहता है। ब्रह्मा जी अपनी इस रचना को देख कर परेशान हो गए और भगवन विष्णु का समरण करने लगे।
उन्होंने अपने कमंडल से अपने हाथ में जल लिया और लेकर संकल्प स्वरूप उस जल को छिड़क कर भगवान श्री विष्णु की आराधना करने लगे। ब्रम्हा जी की पूजा से संतुष्ट होकर भगवान विष्णु तभी उनके सामने प्रकट हो गए और उनकी समस्या जानकर भगवान विष्णु और ब्रह्मा दोनों आदिशक्ति माँ दुर्गा की पूजा करने लगे। विष्णु जी की पूजा से खुश हो कर भगवती दुर्गा वहां तुरंत ही प्रकट हो गयीं। तब ब्रह्मा और विष्णु जी ने उन्हें अपनी पूरी समस्या बता दी।
ब्रम्हा जी तथा विष्णु जी की बातें सुन कर आदिशक्ति माँ दुर्गा के शरीर से सफ़ेद रंग का एक बहुत बड़ा तेज निकला जो एक देखते ही देखते एक नारी के रूप में बदल गया। इस नारी के 4 हाथ थे जिनके एक हाथ में वीणा तथा दूसरा हाथ में वर मुद्रा थी। अन्य दोनों हाथों में किताबें एवं माला थी। आदिशक्ति माँ दुर्गा के शरीर से उत्पन्न होने के बाद उन देवी ने वीणा बजायी जिससे संसार के सभी जीव-जन्तुओं को वाणी प्राप्त हो गई। जल के नदियों में बहने से कोलाहल होने लगा। पवन चलने से सरसराहट होने लगी। सभी देवता शब्द का प्रयोग करने लगे । तभी सब देवताओं ने शब्द और वाणी देते वाली उन अधिष्ठात्री देवी को "सरस्वती" कहा।
फिर आदिशक्ति देवी ने ब्रह्मा जी से कहा कि मेरे तेज से उत्पन्न हुई ये देवी सरस्वती आपकी पत्नी बनेंगी। जिस प्रकार विष्णु जी की शक्ति लक्ष्मी है, महादेव शिव की शक्ति पार्वती होंगी, उसी प्रकार सरस्वती देवी ही आपकी शक्ति होंगी। ब्रह्मा जी ने सर झुका के आदिशक्ति देवी की आज्ञा मान ली। ऐसा कह कर आदिशक्ति माँ दुर्गा अंतर्धान हो गयीं। इसके बाद ब्रह्मा जी सरसवती देवी से साथ संसार बनाने के कार्य में लग गए।
According to the Upanishads, at the beginning of the creation, Lord Brahma created all the living beings and humans by taking knowledge from Lord Shiva. But he was not satisfied with his creation. They felt that something was missing. There is so much peace and silence all around. Brahma ji got upset after seeing this creation of his and started remembering Lord Vishnu.
He took water from his kamandal in his hand and sprinkled that water in the form of a resolution and started worshiping Lord Shri Vishnu. Satisfied with the worship of Brahma ji, Lord Vishnu appeared in front of him only then and knowing his problem, both Lord Vishnu and Brahma started worshiping Adishakti Maa Durga. Pleased with the worship of Vishnu ji, Bhagwati Durga immediately appeared there. Then Brahma and Vishnu ji told them their whole problem.
After listening to the words of Brahma ji and Vishnu ji, a white colored divine light came out from the body of Adishakti Maa Durga, which turned into a woman in an instant. This woman had 4 hands, in one hand there was Veena and in the other hand there was Var Mudra. The other two hands had books and garlands. After being born from the body of Adishakti Maa Durga, that goddess played Veena by which all the living beings of the world got speech. There was an uproar due to the flow of water in the rivers. The wind started rustling. Everyone started using words. That's why all the gods called that Adhishthatri Devi who gives words and speech "Saraswati".
Then Adishakti Devi told Brahma ji that this goddess Saraswati born from my glory will become your wife. Just as Vishnu ji's power is Lakshmi, Mahadev Shiva's power is Parvati, in the same way Saraswati Devi will be your power. Brahma ji bowed his head and obeyed the orders of Adishakti Devi. After saying this, Adishakti Maa Durga disappeared. After this, Brahma ji along with Saraswati Devi got engaged in the task of creating the world.
