Katha:

॥Shri Mahaganadhipataye Namah॥

Parvati ji asked Ganesh ji, "O son! Which Ganesha should be worshiped in the month of Magha? What should be offered and what kind of food should be taken in worship on that day? Please tell it in detail."

Ganesh ji replied, "O mother! In the month of Magha, one should worship Ganesha named 'Bhalchandra'. Make ten laddus of sesame on this day. Offer five laddus to the deity and donate the remaining five laddus to Brahmins. At the same time, worship the brahmin with devotion and give him Dakshina. After this, you yourself should eat ten laddoos made of sesame seeds.”

I will tell you the story of King Harishchandra about this.

In Satyuga there was a famous king named Harishchandra. In the Kshatriya religion, he was a clever, gentle in nature, a truthful speaker, and a worshiper of learned Brahmins. There was not even a mention of unrighteousness in his kingdom and no one was poor, lame, or unhappy. All the people were disease free.

An ascetic Brahmin named Rishi Sharma lived in his kingdom. He died after getting a son. His wife started taking care of the son. Due to lack of any means, the widow used to feed the Brahmin's son by begging.

She used to fast on Sankata Chaturthi of Magha month. She always used to make an idol of Ganpati ji from cow dung and worship it. She used to make ten laddoos of sesame only by begging.

A Chandal potter lived in this kingdom. He tried pottery many times for his daughter's marriage but his utensils never got cooked and always remained raw. Then he asked a Tantrik for the solution of his problem.

Tantrik said that if you sacrifice a boy without telling, your pottery will ripen. He thought whose child should he offer? Whose child he will offer, he will not leave him alive. He told his wife that Rishi Sharma Brahmin had passed away.

His widowed wife feeds on begging. What will she do with her child? He thought that if he offers his child as a gift, then his pottery will be ripe and the widow will also be benefited.

Meanwhile, the son of the widow tied the idol of Ganesha around his neck and went to play somewhere. Then that Chandal potter forcefully held the child of that widow and made him sit in his aavan, closed that aavan, and while cooking the earthen utensils, lit fire in it. After committing this heinous sin, he went to sleep at night without any worries.

When the child's mother reached home, she became very worried after not finding her child at home. She started searching for her child, when she could not find him, she was very sad. She started praying to Ganesh ji while crying. "O, Lord Ganesha! The one with the face like an elephant! The one with a huge body! You protect me who is suffering.

Hey Lambodar! Hey Vinayaka! O one with four arms! O the one who wears the moon on his head! O Merciful! I am sad about the separation of the son. In this way, she kept on crying all night.

In the morning, the potter came to see his baking utensils, when he opened the door, he found water equal to the thigh gathered in it and saw a child playing in the water. Seeing this amazing phenomenon, he was amazed and started trembling with fear.

He brought the news of this amazing incident to the Raj Darbar and he also told the misdeeds committed by him in the Rajya Sabha. The potter said, “O Maharaj Harishchandra! I deserve death for my bad deed. When I opened the door in the morning, I saw that this boy was sitting without any fear the way I was sitting and that door was filled with water up to the thigh. I was shaken by this terrible scene and I have come to you to inform you about it.”

The king was very surprised to hear the words of the potter and went to see the boy. Seeing the boy playing happily there, the king said to the minister, “Whose boy is this? Find it out Where did this thigh-sized amount of water come from? The child was neither burnt by fire nor is it troubled by hunger and thirst. He is playing in the house in the same way as he is playing in his house.

The king was talking like this that only then did that widow Brahmini come there crying and sobbing. She started cursing the potter. The condition of that Brahmini was the same as a cow mooing on seeing its calf. That Brahmini started loving her child in her lap and sat in front of the king trembling. King Harishchandra asked - O Brahmin! Do you know any witchcraft or have you done any religious work, as a result of which even the fire could not touch the child?

When the king said this, the Brahmin said - O Maharaj! I do not know any witchcraft, nor do I know any method of penance, yoga, etc. Hey Maharaj! I keep fast on the destroyer Ganesh Chaturthi. Due to the effect of that fast, my son has been saved alive. After listening to the Brahmin, the king ordered that all the people of my kingdom should fast on this sankatanaashak Ganesh Chaturthi. From that day all the people of the city started fasting on Ganesh Chaturthi every month.
