This fast is one of the Sankatnashak Ganesh Chaturthi fast. You can observe this fast to fulfill all your wishes. This fast brings happiness and peace to your home. You can also recite Shanti Path during this fast. The fast will be completed after offering water to the moon at night.
Katha:
॥Shri Mahaganadhipataye Namah॥
Once upon a time, Parvati ji asked Ganesha, “O Ganapati! Which name of Ganesha should be worshiped on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi?
After listening to Parvati ji, Ganesha said, “The name of Kartik Krishna Chaturthi is Sankata. Ganesh ji named Ping should be worshiped that day. Food should be taken once. After fasting and worship, a Brahmin should be fed and he should eat silently. I am telling the result of this fast, listen carefully. Kartik Krishna Chaturthi Sankata should perform Havan by mixing ghee and urad. By doing this man gets all kinds of success.
Ganesh ji further says, "O Mother Parvati! I am telling an earlier history in this regard. Listen to the Ganapati fast and the method of worshiping it as described in the Puranas."
Ganesha narrated the story of the demon king Vritrasura:
The demon Vritrasura conquered all three worlds and subdued the deities. He drove the deities out of their realms. As a result, the deities became directionless. Then all the deities along with Indra went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu.
After listening to the deities, Vishnu said, "Because of living on an island in the middle of the ocean, they have become mischievous and strong without suffering. They have taken a boon from Brahma ji that they will not die by any god. That's why you people go to Agastya Rishi.
Those sages will drink the sea, then the demons will go to their father and you people will live happily in heaven. Therefore your work will be accomplished with the help of Agastya Rishi."
Hearing this, all the gods reached the hermitage of sage Agastya and pleased him with prayers. Muni was happy and said, "O Gods! There is nothing to fear, your desired wish will definitely be fulfilled."
Hearing these words of the sage, all the deities went to their respective realms. Here Muni was worried that how would he be able to drink such a big sea? Then by remembering Ganesh ji, he performed the beautiful fast of Sankat Chaturthi methodically. After fasting, Ganesha was pleased with him. With the effect of the same fast, sage Agastya dried up the sea easily by drinking it.
Only by listening to the story of this fast, one gets the result of hundreds and thousands of Ashwamedha Yagya and Vajpayee Yagya, and the progeny of sons and grandsons increases.
